Happy Grandparents’ week

I was flipping through the magazine and I realized that the society had dedicated the last week of November as grandparents’ week. Perhaps it is better known as senior citizen week, since not everybody above 55 is married or is someone’s grandparent.

What izzit like to be with our grandparents? I can’t remember anymore. It had been almost a decade since my maternal grandpa passed away. I was young. The memories are becoming indistinct and fading.

My last fond memory of grandpa was on a Sunday night. He waved us goodbye from his balcony as we drove away in the deepening twilight. A few days later, he slipped into coma and we lost him. It was sudden. Everything seemed like a dream.

I knew what was going on, but I did not shed a single tear. It doesn’t mean that I was unaffected. It hurts when we lost our love ones. And sometimes, it is beyond tears.

Nowadays, there are many incidents whereby the children abandon their parents once they were married. There are more who neglect the elderly and treated them like dirt. Those people are extremely despicable and nasty. Do they have a heart, to disown the people who that brought them up? I hope there will be retribution, that their children will treat them the same way they treated their parents. But on the other hand, I wish there will be fewer of such cases in the future. So contradicting….

Be patient and nice to your grandparents because they are not with you forever. One day, they will be tired of this world and move away. Like me, you wish you had one more chance to respect them, listen to their stories and go for a stroll, but you will eventually realize it is all too late.

Your grandparents are wiser and more knowledgeable than u ever thought. Do turn to them for advice because they had been through much more in life and can be extremely patient!!!

Lastly, Happy Grandparents’ week!!!
