It is the time for moon cakes again!! Green tea flavor, single yolk, double yolk, ice cream moon cake etc etc…. Yummy!!! How wonderful it is, to have traditional festivals linked to food. It makes festivals so unforgettable, and I’m drooling!!!
The joyous Mid-Autumn festival is a celebration of reunion, on the fifteenth day of the eighth month on the lunar calendar, and it usually occurs around the autumn equinox. It is a day when everything is supposed to be round - 天上月圆 人间团圆This is the time of the year where most Chinese believe the moon to be the roundest. Is the moon square at other times??
I am still very much amazed, to have a festival dedicated to the moon!!
When I was very young, mid-autumn festival is a day I believed that setting a tree on fire is legal, and I ended up killing a small tree with my brother.
As I grew older, it is a day I believed there was a fairy and rabbit on the moon, and I spent the night trying to spot them with binoculars.
Soon after, I was told not to point my fingers at the moon, as the fairy will get angry and cut my ears off!!
Later on, I was made to believe that round is good, and everyone will be happy. So, I took home my spelling book with a circle in it, but got a spankey on my very round butt instead!!
Adults are like that, I don’t believe what they say anymore!! But as I grew older, I am becoming like an adult. I told my little naive cousins the very same things I was told, and they actually believed me!!
Whatever it is, Mid-Autumn festival is a day where the moon will be most appreciated. It is also a day to believe that our loved ones from aboard will be mesmerized with the same beautiful moon of the year, where warmth and comfort embraces….
Here is a nice song I found, with beautiful lyrics sang by Faye Wong.
但愿人长久 千里共婵娟
Wishing all my friends a wonderful Mid-Autumn Festival.
This entry is specially dedicated to my best curry buddy - Yishi!! Hope you are having fun in Taiwan now!!
