kindness act

Taking the train is a daily routine for many people, including myself. There are plenty of new things happening each day and I enjoy observing events going on around me. There is in particular, one phenomenon that had caught my attention.

I noticed that people often rush into trains and then searched hastily for a seat. After which, their butts seem to be stuck until they had reached their destinations. It looks like there is completely no reason to give up their seats! To me, that is extremely disappointing and saddening.

There was a granny who boarded the train with me this morning. She looked fragile and weak as she trembled into the train cabin. I was hoping to see some kind souls willing to give up their seats to this old lady. But as I had expected, none did. Every seated passenger totally ignores the presence of standing passengers. They were either in deep coma, buried behind their newspapers or practically starring into space. Surprisingly, everyone was aware when the train arrived at Jurong East!

I was just wondering- How are we going to portray ourselves as a world-class city when we failed to perform the slightest act of kindness? It makes me sick to my guts to realize how nasty, heartless and selfish some individual can be. Have our parents and teachers failed to inculcate the moral values and virtuous acts in us? I think it is time to take a step back and reflect on ourselves.
